In 1906, the Qing government established Jinan School, the first state-run school for overseas Chinese in Nanjing in order to spread education and establish ties with overseas Chinese”. Jinan School was the predecessor of Jinan University located in Guagzhou, which is reputed as Top institution of Higher education for Overseas Chinese”.
Jinan” comes from The Tribute for Yu” in Classic of History, ”On the east, reaching to the sea; on the west, extending to the moving sands; to the up most limits of the north and south: his name and influence filled up (all within) the four seas.” Its meaning is to spread excellent Chinese culture all over the world. The word expressed the school founders’ confidence in carrying forward Chinese civilization and their mission to be connected with compatriots all over the world.
In more than one hundred years, Jinan people have been adhering unwaveringly to this mission. Jinan University has trained over 200 thousand talents of all levels and variety for China and the world and has made indelible contributions to the modernization construction and overseas Chinese affairs of our country, to the reunification of our motherland, the smooth return, prosperity and stability of Hong Kong and Macao, and to carrying forward Chinese culture and contacting Chinese all over the world.
